FLAG RETIREMENT PROGRAM

2025 Flag Retirement Program

ATTENTION: Scouters, Youth Groups, Teachers, Home School groups, and Parents!

(The 2024 Flag Retirement Ceremony was a rousing success and we retired over 1580 flags!!)

YOUTH GROUP FLAG FOLDING OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE BETWEEN NOW AND SEPTEMBER!

Contact the Post at Contact@VFW1177.ORG to schedule a hour (or more) of Flag folding!! We'll teach your young folks the proper way to fold the Flag and then invite them to come out in Sept to participate in the formal retirement. Again, we'll work with you to schedule a flag folding event to meet your date/time needs!!

(We can also bring the flags to YOUR location!)

For Your Planning Purposes:

Loudoun County VFW Post 1177 invites you to bring your young Americans out to our Post to participate in a flag folding event (we schedule these to meet YOUR needs).

Later in the year, (@Sept from 9-12) VFW Post 1177 would then like to invite you to bring your young Americans out to participate in our annual Formal American Flag Retirement Ceremony.

We'll conduct the flag retirement ceremony on a Saturday at 9am in partnership with the Loudoun County Fire & Training Center located at 16600 Courage Ct., in Leesburg VA.

(Photo below of one of our very first ceremonies!)

Participants will learn to properly fold the American Flag and how to properly retire the flag by burning. If you have old American Flags, please bring them out and we will retire them with honor.

Each participant will be awarded with a special remembrance of their participation in the formal Retirement ceremony.

The American flag has a long history, and the members of our organization have spent nearly as long defending and honoring our nation's most iconic symbol of freedom. Whether you're looking for the historic details of how the U.S. flag came to be, or the rules and regulations that encompass her daily flight, we're here to ensure you can find the information you need.

Interested in retiring a flag?  Post 1177 maintains a drop box for flags, accessible 24 hours a day, just outside the side entrance of the Post Home at 401 Old Waterford Rd. In Leesburg, across from the Rust Library.
